Expressive Drawing 1.3
Third variation: Start with eyes closed. I started with my eyes closed and created the blue lines. I continued a little longer with the blue paint, but it wasn’t dark enough, so I switched to the black paint.

This is another automatic drawing, similar to what I did in the previous post. The idea is to “just do what comes natuarally.”
The variation for this one is to create the drawing with your non-dominant hand, which in my case, is my left hand.
I really like Aida Schneider’s abstract artwork.
You can see her art at: http://aidaschneider.com/
Her works are 98% totally abstract, but you can tell there is some type of narrative underneath it all. I tried that and created a very busy composition. Did I mention it is Very Busy?
It is OK, but I need to learn to cover up and hide and then expose an element here and there. Instead, what I did with this one was draw out the whole thing and and then fill it in like a coloring book. Not very elusive or mysterious at all. I am going to count it because I need 100 paintings, but I am going to have to work on the idea of taking a theme or story and letting it unfold the longer the viewer looks at it. I need to not give it to them in one huge chunk – all at once.
I am fortunate to live near a beautiful lake, and drive by it every time I drive down the hill. jIt is hard to find the perfect shot, because I am not a photographer, but I jog around it a couple times a week and capture the essence in my mind. This is an attempt to capture the qualities of the lake in an abstract way. It wasn’t turning out the way I envisioned it until I went a little crazy with the colored pencil and put some energy into the painting.

Mr. Blue Sky” is a favorite Electric Light Orchestra song. This painting started as a grid on a page. I started playing with the lines and changing them here and there and this house with clouds and an asterisk shaped sun appeared.
I love creating ceramics. However, I don’t have a kiln or the means to do ceramics right now. I plan to look into that as soon as I am finished with the 100 day challenge. In the meantime, I will content myself with painting pictures of ceramics. This is a composition of overlapping vessels and cups. It is currently on display at the Art Association Holiday Art Show.
I was going through some of my old school notes and sketches and found a sketch that lead to this painting. This is kind of how I doodle, with concentric shapes and lines. I found this composition among my notes and decided to paint it. I used some scrapbooking paper as an accent.

Today I really got to work and completed 4 paintings – mostly abstract. For the first one, I continue the swirls I started in the Kimono painting. The swirls were OK, but something was missing. Then I superimposed some blocks and that added a bit of visual interest. I ended up liking this one a lot. I didn’t start it today. This one has taken a couple of days to get right.

Today’s painting turned out well. I ran out of prepared boards, so I had to go back to theĀ 18″ x 14″ boards that I can’t find frames for.
I found some great photos of Tuscan landscapes online and used one to compose this painting. I outlined a lot more than I have been doing. I think it works.

I guess if you only paint one picture, it isn’t quite a series yet, right?
I like kimonos. I like all things Japanese. But a nice kimono, displayed properly is a thing of beauty.
So, I plan to use the form of a displayed kimono as a framework within which I will paint other pictures. I will try abstracts like this one first, but then I may move into doing some of my landscapes within the kimono framework.
Should be fun.
I also did another teacups piece today. I did some teacups art for my final solo show at college and really liked them. I am going to have to dig those up again and see what I did. They weren’t still lifes. They were more an image of the “essence” of a pot or teacup. I will need to loosen up and try that again.
